What Hair Style is for Me? - by Blake Richard

 

While doing hair for over eight years now, I’ve gotten to learn so much about a woman and their perception of beauty when it comes to their hair. Most women will sit in the chair and the first thing that will come out of her mouth is, “I don’t want to cut any length off!”. You KNOW what I’m talking about!… And you have probably fallen victim to this from time to time. And there is nothing wrong with that. But in some cases, for me, these are crushing words. Not because I want to be scissor happy and cut everyone’s hair in a short bob (although timeless and chic) or that I dislike long hair; length of hair is not the point I’m trying to make here. It’s that when those words are said, 9 times out of 10, the client is hiding behind their hair. Like a safety blanket, being used to cover the insecurities that lie inside. The truth is... you could be missing out! Like I tell my clients, “There’s no point in holding on to long hair if you can’t breathe life into it”! Meaning; Your hair should reflect the best parts of you rather than be a barrier to your imperfections. Your hair should have a personality that reflects you at your best! Your hair should be your confidence! For goodness sakes, you never leave the house without it! (Unless you’re into today’s wig trend… But we’ll save that for a different blog ;) )

Look. We ALL have insecurities! And we all have features of ours we don’t necessarily “love”. This is why I’m going to give you a list of educated tips when it comes to deciphering how to capture your best atop. These are small tricks to help accentuate certain features and pull focus away from other features. 



1. CHANGE UP YOUR STYLE! 

Have fun with your hair! It’s so easy to get stuck in styling your hair the same way everyday. The thing is… People notice change! With change comes compliments… And who doesn’t love a compliment?!

2. ELONGATE THE ROUND

If you feel you have a round face, try a center part. A center part helps to elongate the face as it keeps the eye traveling up rather than stopping at the top of the hairline. For even more lengthening, add volume at the crown. To keep your gym look on point, keep some volume at the top when pulling your hair back into a pony tail or bun.


3. WIDEN THE LENGTH

If you feel you have a long/slender face, keep your volume on the sides. Try curling your hair away from your face to open up the sides. For the gym, maybe a headband that wraps over your forehead to keep the volume minimal on top and fuller at the sides.


4. FRINGE BENEFITS

If you want to minimize forehead real estate, bangs are the way to go. Whether short or long.


5. PABLO PICASSO. If it’s a prominent nose you’re not fond of, try a swoop bang. It takes the eye to a different focal point. Or… Say you have a bit of curve in your cute little snout. If you’re bold enough, try an asymmetrical cut. This will give balance and a heck of a lot more character!
